Signs

Graham: What's the matter?

Bo: There's a monster outside my room. Can I have a glass of water?

Graham: What's wrong with the water next to your bed?

Bo: It tastes old.

When I was eight years old, I loved to stay at my grandparents’ house. I would do this on a Friday night and I would count down the minutes until I was there with my Nana and Pepaw.
Every time I would go there we had a routine. We would get a large thin crust pizza from Pizza Hut and we would stay up and watch a VHS tape that would become my favorite movie to this day. That movie was called "Signs."

Signs is a science fiction horror movie that discusses the values and views on faith, family, and even extraterrestrial life. Starring Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix (best actor ever hands down), this movie is my comfort scary movie. Honestly, I watch this movie at least twice a week, preferably in a very dark room where all I can see is just the screen (you will understand why once you watch it). The main character Graham, played by Mel Gibson, is a former reverend who lost his wife and his faith in a span of one night. When he wakes up one morning and looks out to see crop signs in his field, his life and the lives of his family are changed forever.

Honestly, this movie never gets old to me. The cast was perfect and the film was thought-provoking. It made me ask myself what I would do in this situation, which also made me wonder why there was not a single firearm shown in this movie when there was a literal alien invasion happening all over the world.

There is also a moment in the movie that is considered to be one of the scariest movie moments ever (once again you will understand why once you watch it).

             Main Takeaways:

  1. Even though it is considered to be a horror movie, this is a movie about never losing faith in what you believe in even if the world around you is falling apart. You keep going and never give up when people need you.
  2. Never ever live near crops. I have yet to see a movie where a house with crops around it is not scary. Run in the opposite direction everyone.
  3. This director is known for the suspense and twists he creates in every movie he directs and this one does not disappoint.

              Memorable Quote:

Graham: People break down into two groups when they experience something lucky. Group number one sees it as more than luck, more than coincidence. They see it as a sign, evidence, that there is someone up there, watching out for them. Group number two sees it as just pure luck. Just a happy turn of chance. I'm sure the people in Group number two are looking at those fourteen lights in a very suspicious way. For them, the situation isn't fifty-fifty. Could be bad, could be good. But deep down, they feel that whatever happens, they're on their own. And that fills them with fear. Yeah, there are those people. But there's a whole lot of people in the Group number one. When they see those fourteen lights, they're looking at a miracle. And deep down, they feel that whatever's going to happen, there will be someone there to help them. And that fills them with hope. See what you have to ask yourself is what kind of person are you? Are you the kind that sees signs, sees miracles? Or do you believe that people just get lucky? Or, look at the question this way: Is it possible that there are no coincidences?

                Scare Factor:
This movie has everything from jump scares to creepy little girl in the background saying something weird. You will know when something scary is about to happen. The tension in this movie was almost unbearable. You were dreading when it would get dark outside. The aliens were mysterious throughout the entire movie. You never knew when you would catch a glimpse of them. It was very unpredictable.

SPOILERS: When the crickets stop or you see a birthday party scene, be ready to close your eyes.

HINT HINT- This scene still gets me every time!

Intermission Score- 8/10

+has an interesting plot
+characters are well written
+scares still get me each time

-could have seen the aliens just a little bit more than what was shown
